"
A drink I took of the magic mead,
Taken out of Othrorir.
Then began I to know and to be wise,
To grow and to weave poems."
-from Runahal
"...It
was borne on his mind that a Hall house he would have
made him by men a mightier mead-place than men's offspring
remembered ever, and there, inside he would deal out
to all, the young with the old, as God had endowed him,
save the folk-share and the fates of men."
-from Beowulf

Mead--the
nectar of the gods, toasted by the Celts & Vikings, flagons
enjoyed by Arthur & his court...made from honey produced by
bees, who were revered throughout the ages as heavenly agents,
divine ones and the double soul of those who had passed on...
Mead
is widely accepted as the first beverage ancient man was known
to ferment and enjoy. Scholars believe early honey gatherers
had their wild, yeast-laden honey watered down (perhaps by
rain) enough to ferment and produce mead. This early 'mead'
was a crude beverage but led to the beginning of it all. Throughout
the ages many civilizations have held mead in high regard
as having mythical, spiritual & reproductive qualities.
In
medieval England royalty employed mead makers and
their profession was held in the highest esteem. Many stories
in Greek mythology refer to mead as a source of magic, knowledge
and enlightenment.
The
Vikings & Celts believed that mead would bring
them immortality, poetry and paradise. The term 'honeymoon'
comes from the traditional custom of giving the newly married
couple enough mead to drink each night for the first moon
(month) of their marriage so as to promote fertility and enhance
the chances of children.
Mead
was the beverage of kings and the common man in ancient places,
throughout Europe and beyond and stayed that way for many
centuries. Its popularity began to wane when the price of
barley became cheap, thus, making it more economical to produce
ale for the masses rather than mead. Although it is not as
well known in today's world, mead will continue to be, as
our forebears thought--"of all things". Mead aficionados
and novices alike, will not only appreciate its magical taste
but also its humble beginnings and cherished history.
Our
aim is to educate, provide and create quality meads
and other ancient libations for present-day serfs and vassals
alike...
